Patient Outreach/Support By Email, Helpline Or Forum:
MIF is a patient centered organization celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary in 2013. People from over 120 countries around the world contact us for advice about their melanoma diagnosis. Whether low risk or serious disease, we guide melanoma patients and their loved ones and offer ongoing support throughout their journey. We help patients and caregivers understand their pathology reports, prognosis, and therapy options, including clinical trials, as well as where to get the best possible care. Many agencies, including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, refer people to our hotline and we welcome referrals from all sources. Our forum has thousands of participating members who create a safe and supportive environment for melanoma patients and their loved ones. The forum is moderated for accuracy. Webinars are presented regularly by top experts in melanoma and are archived for continual access
Safe From The Sun Walk And Run:
This event will be April 27, 2014, at Wilson Farm Park. Along with a walkathon and 5k Race, we hold an extensive health expo and free skin cancer screenings for the community at large as well as all participants, sponsors and their families. This is the largest melanoma awareness event in the world and honors/remembers melanoma patients, caregivers, leading doctors and our top volunteers.
Education drastically increases the cure rate for melanoma! Our goal is that by teaching skin self-examination and sun safety to the public in all venues we can have an even greater impact on mortality rates. We can teach you in two minutes!
This program allows MIF to educates students about the dangers of tanning salons and the importance of self-examination. The signature program of this campaign is the “Save Your Skin Prom Pledge.” Female students are asked to sign a contract committing to stay away from tanning salons in preparation for the prom. Once their parents have also signed the contract, it is exchanged for a donated certificate from a local salon for a prom related service (i.e. up-do, manicure, etc).
Safe From The Sun Seed Teams:
The SEED (Support through Education, Events & Development SM) Team Program allows volunteers nationwide to bring melanoma awareness to their hometowns. Working in close partnership with MIF, these volunteers host fundraising events, show early detection instructional videos and distribute informational materials throughout their communities.
